Erich Fromm - Kapitalizm birey kavramı & bireyin kendinden uzaklaşması

Son bir kaç kuşak içerisinde, pazarın artan etkisiyle benlik kavramı "sahip olduğum şey neyse, ben oyum" anlamından, "nasıl olmamı istiyorsanız, ben oyum" anlamına gelecek şekilde değişmiştir. Artık pazar içinde yaşayan insanlar kendini bir mal olarak görmektedir. Tıpkı herhangi bir malı satan kimsenin satmak istediği şeyden kopması gibi o da, kendinden kopmuştur. Şüphesiz, kendisiyle ilgilenmektedir, pazardaki başarısına çok büyük bir ilgili göstermektedir, ama "kendisi" bir iş yöneticisi, bir işçi yada memur, bir satıcı ve bir maldır. Kendi-menfaatini düşünmesi, "kendi kendisini kullanan" bir kişi olarak -kişilik pazarında en uygun fiyata elde edilebilecek bir mal olarak- kendine duyduğu ilgiye dönüşmüştür.
